Seven rainwater collection structures for the Navajo Mountain and Piute Mesa
areas of the Navajo Nation Reservation are now under reconstruction or
construction and should be completed by this summer, according to Project
Director Hank Stevens. The handy structures, designed to provide water to
individual homes and farms, are being funded by the Castleland Resource
Conservation and Development Council, Inc. (RC&D) with a grant from the USDA
Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS).
The frame structures support a tin roof that directs the rain water to a
storage tank and pipe delivery system for the user. This collection system helps
reduce the number of trips that are often made to acquire water from a source
many miles away. With proper maintenance, the system should operate efficiently
for many years.
Six of the structures are being refurbished and upgraded, while one is being
constructed from scratch as a model for other local residents who may wish to
build one. It is nearly complete, with only the water lines and tank remaining.
