Little Bear-Logan Watershed | NRCS Utah

Description of Watershed

Located in the southern end of beautiful Cache Valley, the Little Bear River meanders from its headwaters in the South and East Forks to its confluence with Cutler Reservoir.  The 122 miles of perennial streams and 228 miles of intermittent streams draws water from more than a 178,000 acre watershed supporting a variety of land uses including forest and rangeland, irrigated and dry cropland, pasture and urban areas.

Most of the agricultural land has been owned and operated by the same families for three to five generations.  Continuing pressure from urban sprawl is causing increased conflicts between farm and urban interests in Cache Valley.

Also included in the project boundary are those lands directly south of the Logan-Cache Airport Road and adjacent to the Little Bear Watershed.  Although some of the Logan River watershed begins on federal forest land in Idaho at the headwaters, it is not anticipated any forest land will be eligible for enrollment in this program.

Top priorities for watershed managers has historically been stream restoration activities, manure management and erosion reduction on grazing land.  As Utah’s first USDA-assisted, Hydrologic Unit Area Water Quality Project, the watershed continues to showcase resource management systems that have been duplicated throughout the state.

In the cropland areas of the watershed, there are about 952 farms covering about 55,100 acres. Primary crops include corn, small grains, and alfalfa.

The watershed includes 58,200 acres of rangeland. Ranches are mostly cow/calf and wildlife production operations.

Pastureland in the watershed comprise about 28,800 acres. Much of this is improved pasture grass species that support dairy operations.
